Dum Spiro, Spero is a Latin phrase that translates into English as "While I breathe, I hope." This is also a state slogan for South Carolina since 1777. I fully embrace this sentiment. There is nothing quite like summering in the United States of America in the southern states of Georgia and South Carolina - especially South Carolina. Whilst vacationing there, I breathe and I hope.

The weather, the food, the beaches, the palmettos, the historic preservation, the smiling faces, the beautiful places...it's almost too much. Is there any wonder that Governor Nikki Haley chose "It's a great day in South Carolina! How may I help you?" as the official telephone greeting for state government agency employees?
While this greeting may seem a bit over the top in its enthusiasm to some, I, for one, as a visitor to the state, find it rather charming to the ear. It conveys both an image and a vision that has such positive energy which certainly brings a smile to my face. It also brightens my attitude and the phone call is likely more pleasant than it may have been otherwise.

Still, in real life, a simple distinct "Hello?" remains the proper greeting for telephone users here in the U.S.A. However, I don't think anyone would mind if you drizzled a little proverbial honey on your usual greeting to enhance the call for your friends and family from time to time.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Leverette
